Short answer: a liftgate that has quit almost always fails in one of three directions — electrical (nothing happens), hydraulic (it moves but badly) or mechanical (something is bent, seized or worn). Telling those apart before you call saves a wasted trip, because the symptom points at the parts and the parts decide whether it's fixed at your dock or in the shop.
Start with what the gate does, not what it doesn't
"The liftgate's broken" covers a dozen different faults. What actually helps is a description of behaviour: does the pump motor run? Does it hum and go nowhere? Does it lift empty but not loaded? Does it drift down on its own once you stop? Each of those is a different set of parts.
Symptom one: nothing at all
No motor noise, no click, no movement. This is nearly always electrical, and the causes run in a predictable order:
- Batteries flat or badly discharged — gates pull enormous current.
- Corroded, loose or burnt battery and ground connections.
- A blown main fuse or a tripped breaker on the feed.
- A failed solenoid — often a single loud click and nothing else.
- A dead switch, a chewed control cable or water in the control box.
Corrosion at a terminal is the single most common one we find, and it is very easy to miss because the connection looks fine until you move it. Anything past checking that the batteries are charged and the terminals are clean and tight is work for someone with the right tools.
Symptom two: it runs but it won't lift
Motor spins, platform doesn't move, or it crawls up and stalls under load. That is the hydraulic side: low fluid, air in the system, a tired pump, a failing valve, or a cylinder that is bypassing internally. Fluid that is low is a symptom too — it went somewhere, so there's a leak at a hose, a fitting or a seal.
Two useful details to note before calling: whether it lifts empty but not loaded (points at pressure — pump, valve or a bypassing cylinder), and whether the fluid level has dropped (points at a leak). Look under the gate for wet spots on the pavement.
Symptom three: it drifts, sags or won't stay level
A platform that sinks after you let go of the switch is usually a valve or cylinder seal letting pressure past. A platform that lifts crooked — one side ahead of the other — is usually mechanical: worn pins and bushings, a bent arm, or a torsion element out of adjustment. Crooked lifting is also how a gate starts eating its own hinges, so it's worth catching early.
Symptom four: noise and rough travel
Grinding, banging or a shudder through the travel usually means worn pins, bushings, rollers or a platform hinge that has opened up. Aluminium platforms also crack — at the hinge line, around the ramp lip, and where the deck has been hit at a dock. Cracked welds don't heal; they run. Welding and fabrication is our background, so a cracked platform or a torn mount is normally repairable rather than a full gate replacement.
What can be done where the truck sits

At your dock, yard, job site or the roadside we handle power and ground faults, solenoids and switches, hoses and fittings, seals, worn pins and bushings, bent or cracked platform sections, mount welding and general adjustment. What tends to come to the shop is heavy structural work: a mount that has torn out of the rear frame, a bent frame behind the gate, or a rebuild large enough to need the truck off the road. The dividing line is covered in mobile vs shop box truck repair.
What to have ready when you call
- Where the truck is — address, dock number, cross streets.
- What the gate does and doesn't do, in the terms above.
- Whether it's stuck up, stuck down or part-way.
- Whether there is a load on the platform right now.
- Whether the truck is loaded and whether it can move.
- Year, make and box length, and the gate make if it's on the plate.
- Whether there's clear space to work behind the truck.
Why gates fail early
Most premature gate failures come down to three things: batteries that never fully recharge on short routes, water and grit sitting in the pivot points, and drivers overloading a platform past its rating. None of those are dramatic. All of them shorten gate life considerably. In our climate, heat is a fourth — hydraulic fluid and seals both age faster, which is one of the points in box truck care in Arizona heat.
